[Exhibition Overview]
Komura Settai (1887–1940) was an artist active from the Taishō through the early Shōwa periods. He worked across a wide range of disciplines — nihonga (Japanese-style painting), book design, illustration, art direction for film, and stage design — and his elegant, sentiment-filled style earned him the epithet "the Harunobu of the Shōwa era." This exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of Settai’s representative works and reconsiders his career through the lens of his relationships with others. Focusing on his exchanges and collaborations with writers such as Izumi Kyōka, nihonga painters like Matsuoka Eikyū, publishers, and theatre practitioners, we examine how mutual respect and shared creative practice shaped Settai’s artistic world and aim to construct a renewed view of the artist.
