[Exhibition Overview]
Komura Settai (1887–1940) was an artist active from the Taishō to early Shōwa periods. He worked across a wide range of disciplines — from nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and book design to illustrations, film art direction, and stage design — and his elegant, sentiment-filled style earned him the nickname “Shōwa no Harunobu.” This exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of Settai’s representative works while reexamining his career through the lens of his connections with other people. We highlight his collaborations and exchanges with many literary figures such as Izumi Kyōka, fellow nihonga painters like Matsuoka Eikyū, as well as publishers and theatre practitioners, showing how mutual respect and collaboration helped shape Settai’s artistic world. Please enjoy on-site the full scope of the work he loved and that was loved by others.
