The Aoi Festival decorates Kyoto's refreshing early summer with an elegant procession. It is said to have started about 1,500 years ago and is an annual festival of Kamo Miso Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) and Kamobetsu Rai Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine), and is one of the three major festivals in Kyoto. Various events (zengi) are held from the beginning of May, and on May 15th, the ``roadside ceremony'' is held, where people wearing Heian costumes parade for about 8 kilometers. This year, the Aoi Festival is also attracting attention because of the costumes from the Heian Dynasty, which have been featured in dramas.
