Wakamiyaoji Gozen Meal - Limited to 20 meals per day

Wakamiya-oji Gozen Meal, available exclusively at lunchtime in Kamakura
Wakamiya-oji Gozen was built in 1182 by Yoritomo, inspired by Suzaku-oji in Kyoto (Heian-kyo). It was the first step in the city planning of Kamakura and a prayer for the safe delivery of his wife, Hojo Masako. Originally located near Yuigahama, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine was moved to its current location at the foot of Kitayama. A straight road connecting Yuigahama and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine was constructed and named Wakamiya-oji. This road served as the backbone for the urban development of Kamakura.

The Wakamiya-oji Gozen Meal is named after this historic road.

The Wakamiya-oji Gozen meal is inspired by kaiseki cuisine.

Kaiseki is a word derived from Zen. It refers to the practice of Zen monks warding off cold and hunger by holding heated stones close to their bosoms during their training. Therefore, "kaiseki cuisine" refers to a light meal meant to stave off hunger.

The "thick tea" served at tea ceremonies is very stimulating and puts a strain on the stomach if consumed on an empty stomach. For this reason, the food at tea ceremonies is originally simple meals that are meant to be enjoyed with the tea. The Wakamiya Oji Gozen meal is made with 20 different ingredients and is prepared with care to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients, allowing guests to enjoy the most delicious food possible.
